Amonsterchild is the personification of my inner creativity and stems from a realization I had while studying art education in graduate school. I realized my creative thinking was being stifled and I needed to get in touch with the boundless creative thinking I once had as a child. As I explored this experience, I personified my creative thinking into a creativity monster, thus amonsterchild was born! It is through amonsterchild that I explore what “playful design” means to me as a designer and artist. You can also checkout some of my latest explorations on my Instagram page.
Created visual style for wedding collateral from the Save the Dates to the Invitations and Thank You cards. I created coasters as favors and event hand-lettered the chalkboard signs for use throughout the wedding.
I crafted the visual style around the theme that we were starting an epic adventure and imbued the visual treatment of the illustrations with a sense of fantastic whimsy.
A series of illustrations created to embody my design approach and convey the concept of 'play' I feel is central to the design process. Each piece in the series focuses on a playful aspect that I try to keep in mind when crafting design solutions. These illustrations are used on my personal business cards and not only channel my design ability and illustration style, but each one captures a concise frame seemingly taken from a larger story. This shows how small illustrated scenes can capture a glimpse of how storytelling is interwoven with design.
Series of illustrations created to explore the narrative of monsters encountered in the Monster Forest, a fictional world I created to personify how aspects such as creativity can take the form of pedagogical entities.
Book cover design created as part of a poster exhibition challenging designers to craft a cover design for a favorite book. This poster is representing a book by Patrick Rothfuss called The Name of the Wind. I chose to focus on a central object in the book, a lute, specifically a broken lute as it has a great deal of meaning to the story and main character, Kvothe. Kvothe is a musician and as a child is sent into a state of shock due to a traumatic event. His only solace is to play the lyre, which he does until it slowly breaks down to a single string. When the final string breaks, he is snapped out of his shock and begins his long road to recovery throughout the remainder of the book.
iOS sticker pack available on the app store. I crafted this sticker pack out of the various monsters I doodle. Monsters are a constant theme in my work as I continue to explore how creativity manifest itself through personified entities.
Space themed stickers created as part of an exploration into a series of interstellar illustrations.
